South West Greens MLC Diane Evers has welcomed a renewed focus on rural and regional communities by new Australian Greens leader Adam Bandt after he indicated his desire for the party to connect more with regional Australia.
Ms Evers, The Greens (WA) spokesperson for agriculture and regional development, has been a supporter of Western Australian farmers during her term, championing the demonstrative economic and environmental benefits of sustainable food production.
With global food production needing to increase by 60 per cent by 2050 to meet projected food demand and agricultural production systems facing the combined effects of higher temperatures and a reduction in rainfall, Ms Evers believes more needs to be done to support regional communities.
Ms Evers says she looks forward to Adam Bandt visiting the South West Region and sharing advocacy for a Green New Deal that includes strategies to regenerate the regions, as well as expanding landcare.
QUOTES ATTRIBUTED TO DIANE EVERS MLC:
“Green values and farmers are in natural alliance.
“Western Australia’s regional communities are essential to our food security, economy and cultural identity and I recognise that many farmers and pastoralists are already practising regenerative and sustainable farming.
“Western Australians are angry and anxious about the lack of action on climate
“To paraphrase new Australian Greens leader Adam Bandt, we need to choose between crops and the fossil fuel industry through a greater understanding of the impact of climate change on agricultural and horticultural food production.
“Farmers are battling one of the worst droughts in Australian history and our fertile food-growing regions are on the brink of collapse — regional communities and their schools, hospitals and small businesses are struggling to cope.
“I hope to see regions supercharged by a Green New Deal to build a clean economy and a caring society, building on the work royalties for regions has done – this is where our future is.
“The Greens want to expand landcare, something I’ve taken action on in the Legislative Council by introducing the Royalties for Regions Amendment Bill 2019.
“This is part of a strong commitment to making sure our regions are looked after and supporting farmers to do it.
“The Greens can’t be bought unlike other parties who accept corporate donations —this makes us strong advocates for people in the regions and people on the land, especially as these are the people who see the devastating impacts of climate change first-hand.
“I was voted in by people – including by farmers – because it’s clear The Greens stand up for regional and rural community interests.”
